Providing information on the nature and role of energy to help the public make informed energy decisions.
Energy Excursions shares self-guided educational content with the public about the complexity and challenges that engineering, science and technology are addressing in order to achieve a sustainable energy future.
Created by experts in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, this educational resource follows our university’s mission to advance society through research, creative activity, scholarly inquiry, and the development and dissemination of new knowledge.
Why Study Energy?
Energy literacy provides an understanding of the nature and role of energy in the world and our lives. To be energy literate is to have the ability to apply this understanding to answer questions and solve problems.
Energy literacy leads to more informed decision-making, improves the security of a nation, promotes economic development, reduces risks and negative impacts to health and the environment, results in more sustainable energy use, and enables cost-savings for both individuals and organizations.
Our free, high-school-level online courses emphasize engineering and earth science applications within the energy industry.
An excursion in pursuit of the safe well, assessing various drilling considerations and best practices for oil and gas exploration and production.
An excursion through carbon storage technology, one of the Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st century set out by the National Academy of Engineering.
An excursion through the Texas water-energy nexus, examining supply and demand of water resources, highlighting the critical question, do we have enough?
An excursion through the various energy sources used to power us through our daily life, with a look at how we might energize our future.
An excursion into Earth’s natural heat source and the geothermal industry, with a look at how oil & gas technology can be applied to develop this renewable energy source.
