The Most Abundant Element in the Universe

Although it’s rare in Earth’s atmosphere, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. This single element makes up about 75% of all existing matter. The age of the universe is currently estimated at 13.8 billion years and the diagram displays the various stages that the universe has gone through. It shows that the first atoms formed at roughly 380,000 years after the big bang and that the first stars started to shine around 200 million years. The first galaxies formed at approximately 400 million years after the big bang with dark energy forming around 10 billion years ago.

Just how rare is hydrogen on Earth? By volume, hydrogen make up just .5 to 1.0 ppm (parts per million) of the Earth’s atmosphere. Why?
